Maximising Your LinkedIn® Presence: How Often To Post?

In the world of professional networking, LinkedIn® stands tall as the go-to platform for making meaningful connections, sharing industry insights and advancing one's career. Yet, amidst the plethora of advice on LinkedIn® etiquette, one question often arises: How frequently should you post on LinkedIn®?

  • Quality Over Quantity:

First and foremost, let's dispel the myth that flooding your LinkedIn® feed with constant updates will automatically boost your visibility and engagement. While consistency is key, quality always reigns supreme. Rather than bombarding your connections with a barrage of posts, focus on crafting thoughtful, relevant content that adds value to your network. Posting too often (multiple times a day) will in fact harm your posts reach, visibility and engagement - you will be penalised by the algorithm for this.

  • Finding the Right Frequency:

So, how often should you post on LinkedIn®?

The answer largely depends on your audience, industry and personal bandwidth. However, a general rule of thumb is to aim for a balanced approach – the algorithm loves consistency. Posting too infrequently may cause you to fade into the background, while excessive posting might overwhelm your connections.

Strive for a posting frequency that maintains a visible presence without becoming intrusive or upsetting the algorithm overlords. For most professionals, posting 2-3 times per week strikes a harmonious balance between staying active and avoiding saturation. This rhythm allows you to maintain engagement with your network without inundating them with constant updates.

However, if this is not feasible once a week, to start off with will suffice. The point is not to stress yourself out sticking to an uncomfortable deadline for the sake of it. Instead, we are aiming to make this a growth venture, which enhances your online presence and experience. Slow and steady.

  • Timing Is Everything:

Posting at the right time can significantly impact the visibility and reach of your content. Previously, back in the humble LinkedIn ® days of origin, when the platform only had a couple of million accounts, we were told the best days to post are typically Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The logic was that on weekdays, professionals are more likely to be actively engaging with LinkedIn® as they navigate their workday routines. It was alleged that Mondays were hectic as people catch up on emails and meetings, while Fridays often see a decline in engagement as individuals wind down for the weekend.

However, this ‘Tuesday to Thursday’ myth has truly been debunked! With LinkedIn®’s current global reach and membership numbers over 1 billion there is no ‘one rule’ for everyone. The best time to post will vary depending on you, your specific audience demographics and time zones. Mix-it-up a little, experiment with different posting times and analyse the engagement metrics to refine your strategy further.

It's also worth noting that with improved access to LinkedIn® (the mobile app in particular) and the increased trust in and role of the platform, members are accessing their accounts at all hours of the day and all days of the week. It has been said that senior leaders and CEO’s regularly log on and review feeds with more attention during the weekend.

Navigating the intricacies of LinkedIn® posting frequency and timing may seem daunting at first, but with a strategic approach and a commitment to delivering valuable content, you can effectively elevate your presence on the platform.

Remember, quality trumps quantity and consistency coupled with thoughtful engagement is the key to cultivating a robust professional network.

So, whether you're sharing industry insights, highlighting your accomplishments or sparking meaningful conversations, let your LinkedIn® presence reflect your expertise, professionalism and genuine passion for your field. By striking the right balance and timing your posts strategically, you'll unlock the full potential of LinkedIn® as a powerful tool for professional growth and networking.
